Challenge

This installation was commissioned for Detour 2012. Handsome was asked to consider unused public space in Hong Kong and the way in which people interact with it. Feeling that public space is often viewed as a no-man’s land , Handsome set out to create something that would encourage people not only to use public spaces but to enjoy it and have fun with each other. To this end, we created Plays Well With Others; essentially a simple piece of playground equipment for children and adults alike.

Solution

Public space in Hong Kong is often viewed as a no-man’s land, so we set out to create something that would encourage people not only to use public spaces but to enjoy it and have fun with each other. To this end, we created a simple piece of playground equipment, a see-saw for up to 10 people at a time which was suitable for most ages. It was built from CNC milled FSC wood and industrial ship parts.

Outcome

Everyone started calling our project ‘The Biscuit’, because of its disk shape. It was a highlight for Detour especially amongst parents and their children. It stood out as simple but truly interactive and fun in contrast with the numerous static outdoor sitting areas and ornamental pavilions that were presented alongside it.
